What is Dialysis Access?

Peripheral Arterial Disease

Dialysis access is a way to allow hemodialysis to be performed on a person without having to go through their veins each time. This can be done through a variety of methods, but the most common is through a catheter that is placed under the skin into the person's bloodstream.

What Dialysis Access is Used to Treat

Variety of Vascular Services

There are several different types of dialysis access, each with its own pros and cons. The type of access used is often determined by the patient's individual needs and preferences.

The most common type of dialysis access is called arteriovenous (AV) access. This type of access uses a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein. AV access is the most efficient type of dialysis access, but it also has been associated with risk of complications. This is why it is important to choose an experienced surgeon who specializes in these procedures.

Another type of dialysis access is called venous-venous (VV) access. This type of access uses two veins, one to remove the blood from the body and one to return the filtered blood back to the body. VV access can be less efficient than AV access, but it is also associated with a lower risk of complications.

The last type of dialysis access is called arteriovenous fistula (AVF). This type of access is created by surgically connecting an artery and a vein. AVF is the least efficient type of dialysis access, but it has the lowest risk of complications.

No matter what type of dialysis access is used, it is important to keep the area clean and free from infection. Patients should follow Southern Kentucky Vascular's instructions for care of their access site. Get in touch with us today to schedule an appointment.
